Lesson #3


Lesson Title: Introduction to First Nations

Grade: Five

   Date: July 15, 2015 


Curriculum Expectations:

      A2. Inquiry
From the perspectives of the various groups involved, use the social studies inquiry process to investigate aspects of the interaction among and  between First Nations and Europeans in Canada prior to 1713
    
Specific Expectations:

      A2.1: Formulate questions to guide investigation into aspects of the interactions
                among and between First Nations and Europeans in Canada prior to 1713,
                from the perspectives of the various groups involved  (e.g., interaction
                between groups such as settlers, couriers de bois, missionaries, Filleres du
                Rio, First  Nation women, warriors, and/or shamans, from the points of
                view of these groups)
Materials:
  • Laptop with access to Padlet
  • Picture of a battle of the Iroquois vs. Huron with the support of New France (Samuel de Champlain)
  • Projector 

Before  – ‘Minds On’ 

  • Projector the picture of the battle between Huron and Iroquois, allowing time for the students to visually explore the picture
  • Discuss with students, what do they think is happening?, who is this?, why do you think the picture is so important to Canada’s history



During – Working On It – Action 
  • Students need to access Padlet – provide access through their email
  • Starting with the “First Nation” Padlet, student will be required to provide a “sticky note” about what they  know about “First Nation” and then follow up with providing a “sticky note” about what they would like to learn (Student can provide more than one “sticky note” and sticky notes can include pictures and words, using references from the internet)
  • Repeat this again with the “Settlers” Padlet 
After (Consolidation)  


  •  Once students have added to the Padlet, verify their understanding by reviewing and discussing the notes with the class
  • Finish with the following video:

     
      Differentiated Learning  
       
      • When using Padlet, students can access “VoiceNote 2 – speech to text”  - a Google Chrome App that allows students to verbally create their “sticky note”
